Wedding Guest Etiquette: 7 Things Every Guest Should Know

Seven practical guidelines for wedding guests, from arriving on time to giving the couple and their vendors room to enjoy the day.

Wedding guests play a part in helping a celebration feel enjoyable and respectful for the couple, their families and everyone working on the day.

1. Be punctual

Arrive on time rather than assuming the event will start late. Being early also gives you an opportunity to settle in and meet other guests.

2. Keep the attention on the couple

Dress appropriately and avoid making the occasion about yourself. Whether you are a guest, caterer, MC or usher, the couple should remain at the centre of the day.

3. Do not bring uninvited guests

Come alone unless you have been invited with someone. Extra guests can affect seating, food and drinks, while showing up without an invitation creates unnecessary pressure for the hosts.

4. Avoid wasting food

Serve yourself a manageable amount. If you would like another helping, you can return for more rather than piling your plate too high at once.

5. Give photographers and videographers room to work

Enjoy the moment without getting in the way of the people hired to document it. Give official photographers and videographers the space they need to do their work.

6. Follow the couple’s guidance on gifts

Gift-giving depends on the couple, the invitation and the cultural context of the celebration. Where guidance has been provided, follow it thoughtfully; a contribution or present can be a meaningful way to mark the occasion.

7. Participate in the celebration

Follow the MC’s cues and support the atmosphere of the event. Being present and engaged can help make the day enjoyable for everyone.
